"Connecting Community"

Opening Show
May 2, 2008
6pm ~ 8pm

Ms. Silberlicht's advanced Pottery class, at Honesdale High School, has

taken on a project which requires them to reach out into their own

community and discover the wealth that lives in our county.

Each student was required to choose a Wayne County Arts Alliance artist to

interview. Working together in class, the students compiled a series

of questions to ask each of their artists so they could share their

 information once returning to class.

Every single student had what they called a most amazing experience. Being frightened at first, to contact an older adult who they hadn't yet met, each experience opened their eyes to the people around them and helped them realize what an artist's life may be like.

Their assignment has been extended to create a piece of their own

work, in clay, which has been inspired from their experience. And now

what will follow is a show titled "Connecting Community".

This show will be hosted by The South Street Gallery 139 South Street Waymart, and will be on display for the month of May. Both student and artist will

each have a piece of their work in the show with a few words by each

student reflecting on their visit with each artist. Ellen Silberlicht,

their teacher, reflected, "After giving an assignment which required

investigating famous potters on the internet...it occurred to me that

we have such a wealth of hands on information right here in Wayne

County. I believe each of my students has grown in many different ways

from their interview experience. It was wonderful to hear their

enthusiasm with each one telling me about it after they had completed

their visit. In their written papers, each one commented on how

worthwhile this assignment was and how much they discovered...not only

about their artist but about themselves. This has been a wonderful

learning and sharing experience for both student and artist! I hope to

see the community at the South Street Gallery for the opening to

celebrate the arts and support the students."

Opening Reception will be held on Friday May 2, 2008 6pm ~ 8pm
